Dr. Muhammad M. Mohiuddin, MBBS (MD)

Director, Cardiac Xenotransplantation Program

"The Medical Miracle of a Pig's Heart in a Human Body"

Dr. Mohiuddin is a Professor of Surgery and Director, Cardiac
Xenotransplantation Program at the University of Maryland Baltimore, MD (UMB).

Previously served as Chief of Transplantation, Cardiothoracic
Surgery Research Program, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH) while holding faculty positions at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and Rush University, Chicago.

He has been involved in Xenotransplantation Research since 1992 and started xenotransplantation research programs at the NIH, the University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, and Rush University Chicago.

He is Associate Editor for the journal, Transplantation, and reviews manuscripts for many other journals. He is also president elect, Dow Graduate Association of North America. Achievements include several NIH and non-NIH grants during his academic career.

Dr. Mohiuddin received his MBBS (MD) degree from Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan and after completing preliminary surgical training at Civil Hospital Karachi, he finished fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia and the Institute of Cellular Therapeutics (Drexel University).

Dr. Mohiuddin has devoted his entire career to xenotransplantation. His contribution to xenotransplantation includes demonstration of the longest survival heterotopic and orthotopic cardiac xenotransplantation. He is currently President of the International Xenotransplantation Association (IXA) after serving as Councilor for 4 years and as liaison to promote productive discord between the IXA and the FDA. He has published over 100 papers, and more than 150 abstracts. Additionally, he has been an invited Xenotransplantation expert speaker on numerous occasions.

His persistence in Xenotransplantation directed him to accomplish the First Human Cardiac Xenotransplantation on January 7, 2022. The surgery was achieved at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore Maryland.

Ambassador Robin L. Raphel, ret'd

Consultant on political, security and economic development issues

Ambassador Robin Raphel is a consultant on political, security and economic development issues in South Asia and the Middle East. As a career foreign service officer, she served nearly 40 years in U.S. foreign affairs agencies, including the Department of State, USAID, and DoD. She was the first Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia, Ambassador to Tunisia, Vice President of the National Defense University, and Deputy Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction.

She managed the sharp increase of development assistance to Pakistan under the late Ambassador Holbrooke, and deployed to Iraq with the first civilian contingent after the 2003 invasion to help restore the critical food ration system throughout the country. Earlier in her career she served in Pakistan, India, South Africa and the UK, and taught history at Damavand Women’s College in Iran. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a Senior Adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, C&O Resources, and Nichols Liu LLC. She serves on the board of the Association of Diplomatic Studies and Training, the Friends of The American University of Afghanistan, and Pugwash USA.

She maintains an active interest in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and is a frequent participant in informal “Track II” discussions on the Afghan peace process. Ambassador Raphel holds a BA degree in history and economics from the University of Washington, and Master’s degrees in Economics from the University of Maryland and Modern European History from Murray Edwards College at Cambridge University in the UK.

Kiran Khalid

Vice President/Editorial Lead, Energy

Kiran is a veteran journalist with more than 15 years of newsroom experience and nearly a decade in corporate communications. Currently she sits at the intersection of media and energy at Edelman, the world’s largest public relations firm. As the editorial lead for DC’s energy practice, Kiran leverages her media acumen and high stakes corporate communications experience to advise clients across the energy landscape.

That expertise is informed by her vast global reporting. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks, she gained access to a madrassa in Karachi to report on what many presumed were “terrorist breeding grounds”. In 2007, her independently-produced documentary short entitled, “We Are Not Free” chronicled a media clampdown during the Lawyers Movement. The film was hailed as an insightful primer about the largest civil society movement in Pakistan.

In 2011, Kiran was the recipient of the American Immigration Lawyers Association Media Leadership Award. The prestigious honor recognizes a member of the media whose coverage most accurately depicts immigration and immigrants.

Kiran’s second act kicked off when she was recruited by Shell to lead the energy giant’s first video and documentary unit in the Americas region. In 2020, Kiran joined Edelman in as the Editorial and Strategic Lead for the Energy team. Since then, she has media trained former administration officials, Fortune 500 CEOs, and c-suite executives for companies across the energy spectrums. She is often sought-after for trusted advice on high stakes communication plans. Kiran was a senior producer for CNN’s New York Bureau when she was recruited by Shell in 2013 to lead the energy giant’s first video and documentary unit for the Americas region.

Kiran is a former adjunct professor at the City University of New York’s (CUNY) Graduate School of Journalism and has been a board member of the American Pakistan Foundation since 2013.

Fun fact: Kiran became the first Pakistani-American broadcast journalist when she made her on-air debut at KZTV, the CBS affiliate in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Shafiq Khan

President and founding partner of Teach the World Foundation, Former President, Marriott.com

Shafiq Khan has been a digital transformation pioneer for over two decades, in particular in transforming the travel industry. He had the privilege of launching eTicketing in the airline industry, and online booking, both industry “ firsts”, at United Airlines in Chicago. He led the digital operations of United Airlines, US Airways/American Airlines and last at Marriott International, with digital sales at Marriott rising from ~$150 M to $15B during his tenure. His last corporate role, was running all of Marriott’s revenue channels—digital and traditional–generating $30B annually as President of Marriott.com .

Shafiq left the business world for the world of social impact by launching Teach the World Foundation to take digital transformation to education. Key objective was launching of global program to increase literacy in developing countries using eLearning. Born and raised in Pakistan. Has an economics degree from the Punjab University and an MBA from Harvard.
